Tom Eltang made his first pipe from a Pipe-Dan hobby kit at the age of 11. At age 16, he apprenticed under the legendary Anne Julie, before moving on to work for Pipe-Dan three years later. Three years after that, Eltang began working for Stanwell. Through these formative experiences with major Danish pipe-making institutions, Eltang cultivated the skills and creativity that would see him emerge as one of the figureheads of Danish artisan pipe-making scene. In terms of influence, it is perhaps only Sixten Ivarsson who has had a comparable impact on the world of hand made pipes.

The poker is something of a signature shape for Denmark’s Tom Eltang, which is quite an achievement given that it is one of the most entrenched staples of traditional, Anglo-French pipe design. Nevertheless, Eltang has made it his own, and why, of all shapes, he chose the poker is easy to understand when it comes to his particular design philosophy. A neo-functionalist at heart, Eltang, much like Sixten Ivarsson before him, subscribes to the idea that the purpose of an object should be the fundamental guiding principle of an object’s form. Thus, the perfect pipe is one that smokes well. In addition to precision engineering, lightness, size, chamber volume, and the ability to be set down when circumstances demand it all play a part in the smoking experience, and the poker is especially amenable to such demands. This one, for example, is compact enough to carry, lightweight enough to clench, and is a sturdy, well balanced sitter. That, to Eltang, is a perfect pipe and, given where Tom Eltang is in his career, it’s clear that countless pipe smokers around the world agree.
