Stanwell Smooth Beech Wood Smooth Brandy (Estate)

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Stanwell’s earliest pipes were not made from briar, but from beech wood. This was back in the 1940s, when the company was still named Kyringe, and briar was exceptionally scarce due to the Second World War and its lasting effects on global trade. After the 1940s, Stanwell switched to briar as standard, and it would not be until the 21st century that the company returned to the medium that got the ball rolling, so to speak. First, Stanwell’s 65th anniversary was celebrated with a special set of two bulldog renditions modeled on the first shape made by Kyringe, with one made from briar, and the other from beech. A decade later. Stanwell released a small run of beech wood pipes in various contemporary catalog shapes. This brandy rendition comes from the latter release, which is no longer in production.

The condition is great. Lightly smoked. Please bear in mind that beech wood does not have quite as high a heat tolerance as briar, so this pipe should be smoked a little more gently than usual.
