Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Stanwell’s shape “70” was designed for the company by the legendary Scandinavian artisan Sixten Ivarsson, and it was one of a handful of distinctive volcano renditions that first graced Stanwell’s catalogs around the 1960s and ’70s. Of all of Ivarsson’s volcano renditions, however, the “70” survived the longest in Stanwell’s output, remaining in production right up until around the turn of the 21st century. It appears to have been a rather popular shape, or at least one that was dear to the Stanwell company, as it was included in the 1942-1992 Jubilaeum series, as well as a couple of other special releases in subsequent years, though ultimately it would be discontinued, as has been the fate of so many a great Stanwell design.

As this one’s nomenclature includes an abridged trademark registration number, it will be a 1960s-70s make, and as it belongs to the Hand Made series, it will be one of the higher-end iterations of the “70” made during that period—something also evident from its fittingly fiery graining.

The condition is good. Some finish fading, handling marks, and a couple of tooth marks at the end of the mouthpiece.
