Stanwell (c.1980s) Buffalo 06 Sandblasted Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

The “06” Dublin was a rather significant shape for Stanwell. Designed for the company by legendary artisan Sixten Ivarsson in 1951, it was one of the first “modern” shapes in Stanwell’s catalog, debuting at a time when the overwhelming majority of the shapes in that catalog were traditional, Anglo-French staples. It would remain in Stanwell’s catalog for a couple of decades following its debut, before being discontinued in the 1970s, with the shape code “06” reused for a different, even more “Danish” shape. Yet unlike so many other Stanwell shapes, the “06” was periodically reissued between the 1980s and the 2000s, including appearances in Stanwell’s 50th Jubilee series and the Poul Stanwell Collection. It is, however, no longer in production as of the time of this listing, and hasn’t been for over a decade. Whether it will be reissued once more is hard to know, though it would certainly be nice.

This particular example looks to be a 1980s make, based on the thin, white “S” logo on its ebonite mouthpiece. It is part of Stanwell’s old Buffalo line, which featured swirling, amber-like acrylic accents.

The condition is fair. Some inner rim charring, minor finish fading, and slight residual oxidation on the mouthpiece.
