Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
During the 1960s, Stanwell introduced a series of shapes under the collective name “Giants.” True to their name, these were Stanwell’s oversized pipes, and while they weren’t quite magnums, they were often comparable to, for example, a post-war OD shape in size. The “82R” (“R” being a designation for most of the Giants) was one of the largest shapes introduced during this period, effectively being a exceptionally long and muscular take on the traditional Anglo-French billiard. As with many of the Giants, this one comes from Stanwell’s higher-end Hand Made line, resulting in a bowl alight with bird’s-eye and cross-grain patterns. As for dating, this one’s truncated registration number stamp will place it prior to the 1980s, though as the shape 82R seemed to disappear from catalogs after the 1960s, I would estimate it to be a 1960s make, or early 1970s at the latest.
The condition is good. Minor inner rim charring, chamber slightly over-reamed, and a few small scratches on the bowl.
