Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Along with the “13,” the “35,” the “36” the “44,” and the “89,” the shape “71,” was one of many pear renditions created for Stanwell by Sixten Ivarsson in the 1960s and ’70s. It might seem strange for a pipe company and an artisan so integral to the development of “Danish design” to pursue such an aesthetic, especially given that, for several years, pear shapes were a sizeable percentage of the models available in Stanwell’s catalogs. But both Stanwell and Ivarsson got their start making pipes that were quite classical and, at least in Ivarsson’s case, this was a predilection that stayed with him until the very end. The 71 is probably the most memorable of the Stanwell-Ivarsson pears, especially for the company, as it was, after a long period out of production, revived a few years ago for the limited run “Favorite” series. This particular “71” is an older make, from the 1960s or 1970s at the very latest. It also belongs to Stanwell’s higher-end Hand Made line, with a lovely, golden finish draped over cross-cut bird’s-eye.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original (slightly time-worn) bowl coating. It comes with its original box and sleeve.
