Description

Taking their name from architect Richard Meier’s avant-garde homestead just off the Long Island Sound, Smith House Pipes are the creation of New York artisan Rich Rosselli. Like the Danish-American functionalists before him, Rosselli excels at creating modernized renditions of tried-and-true, traditional, Anglo-French staples. This he combines with novel uses of color and ornamentation, giving Smith House Pipes their acclaimed, signature aesthetic.

One rather interesting recent development in the realm of artisan pipe making has been to do with mouthpieces, and more specifically, the materials used to craft such mouthpieces. No Doubt thanks to the efforts figures like Chris Kelly, of Eldritch Pipes, and Micah Cryder, of Yeti, custom-cast resins have become especially popular in that regard. Softer than acrylic but more resilient against oxidation than ebonite, resins like the one on this Smith House pot are not only practical, but a great way of evoking the aesthetics of traditional briars through distinctly modern means—with this one having a distinctive, amber-like hue that complements its Ivorite accent and craggy partial sandblast quite perfectly.
