Ser Jacopo is one of the most famous contemporary examples of high-grade, workshop-made Italian pipes. It also belongs to a very special tradition in Italian pipe-making, having been established by Giancarlo Guidi and Bruno Sordini after the two had left another great Italian workshop, Mastro de Paja. Together, Guidi and Sordini created a brand of pipes that reflected their Renaissance sensibilities – even the figurehead of Ser Jacopo happens to be taken from a painting of a nobleman from centuries past – one that would soon become esteemed for creating unique and beautiful tobacco pipes that smoked just as well as they looked.

Ser Jacopo’s Domina series essentially functions as the workshop’s “pipe of the year,” proceeding via an annual release of special, one-off designs that began in 1996. While other esteemed makes have produced similar, annual offerings since at least the 1960s, Ser Jacopo’s version of this practice tends to result in pipes that throw out all the stops in terms of finish and finery, and which are much more limited in production compared to most of their peers. Ser Jacopo is closer to Dunhill than, say, Savinelli in that regard, with the total annual production of Domina pipes limited to just a few hundred pieces.
For 2024, Ser Jacopo released this highly unusual bent billiard-hawkbill hybrid, with a long shank, a wavy, asymmetric rim, as well as some of the workshop’s signature, ornate silverware. It’s more than a little reminiscent of Ser Jacopo’s Picta series, especially those pipes inspired by the paintings of early 20th century surrealists, such as Miro or Magritte. Of course, being a Ser Jacopo, it’s also very tastefully executed, and is indeed beautifully finished in a crisp, Italian-style ring grain sandblast.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original presentation case, sleeve, and illustrative pamphlet.
