Description
Sebastian Heck is part of younger generation of highly skilled artisans to have emerged from Germany in recent years. Based in Heidelberg, Heck took up pipe smoking—and, ultimately, pipe-making—as part of a conscious effort toward slowing down in an otherwise constantly accelerating modern world. Like many pipe makers, Heck took his first steps into the craft as a restorer of estate and heirloom pieces, which in time brought with it an expansion of his workshop and the tools housed within it. With this as a base, creating new pipes of his own was a natural progression. Heck’s development has been greatly influenced by the Danish and German schools of pipe design, and has included time spent learning directly from fellow German artisans, such as Dirk Heinemann.
In the case of this pipe, Heck has gone with a true classic of Danish pipe making: the egg. Typically defined by its bulbous, ovoid bowl, the egg has been a staple of artisan pipe making for over a half a century, with notable contributors to its rise including Former, Anne Julie, S. Bang, and many others. In this instance, however, Heck has opted for a rendition that strikes as a little more “German.” Heck’s pipe exhibits a blending of sorts between the egg shapes of Denmark and shapes such as the wasp, or Wespe, from German artisans such as Wolfgang Becker. This lends the design a distinct sense of forward motion, as well as a unique figure in general. As for the shank accent, Heck has chosen a ring of mother of pearl, adding even more of the animal kingdom to his bird’s-eyed hybrid.
