It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

Savinelli’s Unica has been a recent and quite unique series. It marked the first time in a long while that the Italian make has produced completely new shapes, along with novel finishes to complement them. So far, the pipes have been a special release, with limited quantities available. As can be seen here, U45 is by far one of the most unorthodox and daring shapes in the series, one that would be more expected from an artisan pipe than a factory make. Nominally a “bent pot,” it is not an easy form to pin down on a classical shape chart, instead being closer to something one might find among the Danish and Italian freehand scene, such as those of the Autograph workshop. Exclusive to the Unica series, it is dressed in a light, burgundy rustication and paired with a custom-cast cobalt blue acrylic stem.

This pipe is chambered to allow for the use of 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s own balsa filters, if desired, but will also perform perfectly well without one.
