Sasieni Old England M 58 Rusticated Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

Description

Along with names like Barling, Charatan, and Dunhill Sasieni holds a special place in the history of English smoking pipes—one near to its very beginnings. So the story goes, Sasieni himself worked for Dunhill during its early days. But eventually he left Dunhill, having his own ideas about how pipes should be made, and founded Sasieni. This was 1919, and Sasieni has been the closest thing to a household name in English pipes ever since.

Sasieni always had particularly exacting standards for its pipes, even within the English pipe scene, so when a bowl was found to have even the tiniest, superficial imperfection, the bowl would be used for one of Sasieni’s many sub-brands. The Old England was one such sub-brand, offering connoisseurs a high-quality pipe at a more affordable price point. This one is particularly interesting, as it is an Old England Rustic rendition of the shape 58 Moorgate, but with a slight twist. Sasieni had a few alternate versions of their standard shapes that were used for the Old England sub-brand, with rounded-out shank ends, flared stems, and push fitments, which together resembled army mounts. These shapes were given the “M” prefix, such as the the M58 (seen here), or the M87, a similarly modified shape 87 Hendon.

The condition is good. Some rim darkening and slight residual oxidation on the stem.
