Sasieni 4 Dot Ruff Root Dark 6 Sandblasted Diplomat (Estate)

Along with names like Barling, Charatan, and Dunhill Sasieni holds a special place in the history of English smoking pipes—one near to its very beginnings. So the story goes, Sasieni himself worked for Dunhill during its early days. But eventually he left Dunhill, having his own ideas about how pipes should be made, and founded Sasieni. This was 1919, and Sasieni has been the closest thing to a household name in English pipes ever since.

The Ruff-Root was a rather late addition to the Sasieni catalog, all things considered. Deriving from a special, labor-intensive finishing process, the “Ruff-Root” would ultimately become Sasieni’s flagship sandblast line, taking a place alongside Sasieni’s smooth and rusticated finishes in its high-end “Four Dot” series. After the Sasieni family sold the make in 1979, the “Four Dot” became the “4 Dot” and the “Ruff-Root” became the Ruff Root. And, alongside the Ruff Root was the Ruff Root Dark, a deep burgundy variation on the make’s flagship sandblast line. This one takes the form of a classic English diplomat, which pairs well with the pipe’s reserved dress.

The condition is good. Some rim darkening, minor finish fading, and some minor residual oxidation. Note that this pipe comes with a second, professionally made, aftermarket acrylic mouthpiece. There are no issues with the original mouthpiece, which is included. The previous owner simply had acrylic mouthpieces custom made for all of their pipes, presumably out of preference.
