Rattray’s Coloss Light Smooth Billiard w/ Chrome Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm
Out of stock
Description
The House of Rattray was originally a tobacconist, opening in Perth, Scotland, in 1903, under the oversight of Charles Rattray. House of Rattray soon became a blending house (whose blends are still sold to this day under the Rattray’s name) and a purveyor of Rattray-brand pipes, made for the tobacconist by established English pipe makers. Over the years, the name changed hands, with contemporary Rattray’s pipes and tobaccos being produced under the umbrella of German’s Kopp company (formerly Kolhase & Kopp). Today, Rattray’s pipes are manufactured by various major European makers, such as Chacom and Butz-Choquin in France and Brebbia and L’anatra in Italy.
True to its name, the Coloss is a Rattray’s line comprised entirely of oversized pipes, with wide, deep chambers suited for—with the right blend—ours of enjoyment at a time. Originally, the Coloss was made from briar, as in the case of this one, with chrome army mounts, though more recently it seems that the line has pivoted to olivewood and ash wood renditions of the same shapes. This one came to us in a new old stock lot from over in Europe and is, instead, one of the higher-end briar models, dressed in the original run’s Light brown finish.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. A couple of slight nicks on the outside of the bowl, though nothing major. The pipe is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
