Description

Wengholt pipes were made in the workshop of Preben Holm. Though he would tragically pass away at the age of 42, Holm was one of the pioneering figures in the ‘Danish design’ movement in 20th century pipe-making, a movement that still dominates the high-grade pipe scene. By hand-shaping his pipes on a belt sander, Holm was able to make the most of the patterns of grain hidden within briar, creating spectacular works of pipe art that looked just as well as they smoked. Owing to Holm’s untimely passing, his pipes are even more highly sought after than they were during his lifetime.

This is a very unusual pipe, even by Preben Holm’s standards. For one, it is one of only a handful of pipes made by Holm that is rusticated, rather than smooth or sandblasted. The shape is also a little more conservative than Holm often made, being a kind of bent stack – though one not unlike some of the shapes made by the legendary Pipe-Dan workshop, of which Holm was at one time an employee. I suppose one could also compare it to high-grade Italian makers like Castello. In any case, it is its own pipe, and a delightful one at that Tall and rugged, this one should be absolutely excellent for flakes, though I imagine it would handle most blends superbly.

Quite remarkably, this pipe is completely unsmoked. It’s also one of the few pipes made by Preben Holm for other makes (e.g., Harcourt, Ben Wade) that also bears his name in the stamping.
