Peterson Pre-Republic (c.1947-9) Supreme 107S Smooth Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates

Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

The Supreme has long been the proverbial jewel in the crown of Peterson pipes. The exact date of its introduction seems to still be unknown, though its position at the very top of Peterson’s output has remained constant since at least the mid-20th century. Distinguished by its “flawless, perfectly formed Bruyère” and “rich natural finish,” one might consider it an analog to the Dunhill Root Briar, though it would seem that the Supreme is even rarer than that as far as yearly production volume goes.

This one is a very beautiful, cross-cut billiard, whose bowl is dominated by a murmuration of bird’s-eye and cross-grain patterns. Perhaps more importantly, however, it is a pre-Republic Supreme, with nomenclature that suggests a period of manufacture between 1947 and 1949.

The condition is good for a pipe of its age. Some rim charring, chamber slightly over-reamed, and slight tooth marks.
