Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
Since 1997, Peterson has released an annual, limited edition “Pipe of the Year,” with these pipes typically being novel designs, or reissues of shapes that have long since been discontinued. For the year 2000, Peterson fans were in fact treated to two different POY models, both of which were entirely new shapes within the make’s catalog. We had one of the 2000 models in recently and, funnily enough, this is the other. And a close inspection of the two reveals—despite their significant differences—two shared themes: diamond shanks and silver mountings. While the other 2000 Pipe of the Year was a diamond-shanked bent pot with a sterling silver spigot mount, this one is a diamond-shanked brandy with a sterling silver collar and cap. It’s difficult to know which one is nicer. But it’s certain that the turn of the millennium was a great time to be a Peterson enthusiast.
The condition is great. A few very minor, light scratches on the rim, but nothing at all major.
