Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

With its roots all the way back in the 19th century, the Deluxe System sits at the highest-end of Peterson’s flagship System pipes. The System itself is one of Peterson’s crowning achievements in pipe design, being comprised of a moisture reservoir at the base of the shank, a graduated bore within the stem to control airflow as smoke passes through it, and a P-Lip mouthpiece to direct smoke upward in one’s mouth, rather than straight onto the tongue. This provides for a cooler, drier smoking experience, and has retained a firm foothold in the world of pipes for over 125 years.

This particular Deluxe System is even more special, however, as it wears the line’s Natural finish. For these pipes, Peterson’s bowl turners are especially selective as to the choice of briar used, prioritizing blocks without cosmetic imperfections and with particularly excellent grain patterns. This shape “12.5,” for example, is absolutely laden with bird’s-eye grain, with the light finish it wears allowing said grain to make itself fully heard.

The condition is great. Some inner rim charring, but the pipe is nonetheless beautifully preserved.
