Peterson Captain Pete XL155 Rusticated Bulldog Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates

Out of stock

Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

While Peterson has sold pipes under the “Captain Peterson” and “Captain Pete” names since the 1940s, the latter was transformed closer to the end of the 20th century in the wake of landmark in Peterson pipe history: the release of the Sherlock Holmes series. In a manner not unlike the Kinsale line, the Captain Pete became a line whose designs were derived from shapes in the Sherlock Holmes series, but at a more affordable price point. A key difference between the two was that, while the Kinsale shapes were the same as the Sherlock Holmes ones, with only the finishes and finery reined in, the new Captain Pete shapes were not. Rather, they were decidedly stubbier renditions of Sherlock Holmes shapes, while also being available in dual finishes, as seen here. This one, the XL155, features much the same bowl as a Baker Street in the Sherlock Holmes series, or an XL13 in the Kinsale equivalent, but is much shorter, providing for a far more suitable pocket pipe (on a side note, the shape name, XL155, would appear to additionally gesture toward the much older and long-retired 155 bulldog). Where is the Captain Pete now? Discontinued, unfortunately.

The condition is good. Some rim charring and finish fading.
