Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

It is only natural that the great Irish pipe company Peterson should honor Ireland’s patron saint, which they have done each year since 1998. These St Patrick’s Day pipes are always a limited edition make and each is distinct from the last. They are, as a consequence, collectors’ items, as well as good smokers. The 2022 release was a little different from the norm, as it matched Peterson’s house rustication with nickel army mounts and thematically appropriate, green acrylic stems (which, on a personal note, I enjoyed very much, and still do). This particular 2022 St Patrick’s is a real gem, being not only a pipe from that distinct release, but an example of Peterson’s rare, D20 stacked billiard shape. As with other “D shapes,” the D20 was originally designed for the Danish market, with designs that took inspiration from the world of Scandinavian pipes. And, as with the other D shapes, while the D20 does make appearances every now and then, it is far less common to see than the make’s standard shapes.

The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening.
