Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
It is only natural that the great Irish pipe company Peterson should honor Ireland’s patron saint, which they have done each year since 1998. These St Patrick’s Day pipes are always a limited edition make and each is distinct from the last. They are, as a consequence, collectors’ items, as well as great smokers. The 2010 release continued Peterson’s tradition of offering classic house shapes with the additional fineries of the St Patrick’s Day pipe, including a light brown, grain forward finish and specially engraved nickel collar, and it also continued the tradition of including a few extra, less standard shapes in that mix.
2010 seems to have been an especially good year for those more unusual shapes as far as St Patrick’s Day releases go. Quite recently we had a “B31” from that release come through, a highly distinctive Rhodesian rendition that was originally designed for the 2007 limited edition “River Collection,” where it was known as the “Boyne.” This pipe is a similarly distinctive Rhodesian rendition, and indeed originated in that same River Collection. A rather jaunty take on the Anglo-French staple, the “B32” was first known as the “Lee,” named for the river that flows through Ireland’s County Cork. It is certainly one of Peterson’s rarer designs, even among the non-standard “B shapes,” making this nickel-collared St Pat’s iteration all the more the find.
The condition is good. Some finish fading and chamber slightly over-reamed.
