Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
In 1995, Peterson released a special, limited edition set of pipes whose designs dated back to the make’s earliest years. This first iteration of the “Antique Collection” was comprised of four shapes, each being traceable to one debuted by Peterson between 1903 and 1910.
This particular pipe belongs to the 1999 reissue of the Antique Collection, though it is much the same model as it was 4 years earlier, with the one significant difference being the cut of its ebonite mouthpiece. Known both as the “1903” and the “A4,” the shape is based on a stubby, slightly chubby Dublin from one of Peterson’s earliest 20th century catalogs, faithfully embodying the make’s house style of the time. While the 1995 release of the 1903 had a P-Lip, this one has a fishtail mouthpiece, which became common for 1903/A4 renditions as the years went by.
The condition is fair. Some darkening on the rim and slight charring on the inner rim, minor finish fading, and a couple of superficial scratches on the bowl.
