Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
2023 marked 125 years since the invention of the Peterson System Pipe, so, naturally, Peterson commemorated this milestone with a run of limited edition pipes. The System itself was a patented invention of Charles Peterson, one whose principal features were—and still are–a moisture reservoir drilled into the base of a pipe’s shank, a graduated bore running through the mouthpiece, and a special button at the end of the latter, commonly known as a “P-Lip.” Combined, these elements made for a cooler, drier smoke and reduced tongue bite, as the P-Lip is designed to direct smoke upward in the mouth, rather than directly onto the tongue.
The Peterson System Pipe has been in continuous production ever since it was patented, managing to survive the entirety of the 20th century, and—thus far—a quarter of the way into the 21st. When the time came to commemorate the System Pipe, Peterson released a series of limited edition pipes from the various ranges within which the System is currently incorporated. At the higher-end of this series was the Deluxe System Anniversary line, distinguished by its sterling silver army mounts, “space-fitting” tenons, and aluminum condensers. And, if one wanted something really special to mark the occasion, a small number of Deluxe System Anniversary pipes were finished in the Rua contrast sandblast. A relatively recent addition to Peterson’s portfolio, the Rua employs a form of labor-intensive sandblasting and contrast staining most typically associated with artisan pipes. As a result, Peterson produces very few Rua pipes in a given year, and the finish has thus far been reserved for more limited or occasional releases, such as the 125th Anniversary of the Peterson System Pipe. In total, just 200 Deluxe System Rua pipes were made for the 125th Anniversary series, with this particular pipe being one of them.
