Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen. Erik Nørding retired from pipe making in 2026.
Though Erik Nørding is perhaps best known as a pioneer and unrivaled purveyor of “freehand” pipes in the Danish Fancy style, his output has, since the beginning of his career, included all manner of designs, both in keeping with other currents in modern Danish pipe making, and with more traditional Anglo-French aesthetics.
From the looks of it, this particular Nørding is giving a nod to a rather specific school within Danish pipe making in the late 20th century, that of the pipe makers associated with the Danish town (and make) of Svendborg. With its low-slung posture, faceted shank, and marbled accent, it’s difficult not to see a little bit of Poul Ilsted in the pipe’s design, for example. Perhaps this was an instance of the master learning something from his (former) student?
