Description

Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe-makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen.

This might just be the biggest Nording pipe I’ve ever seen. At around seven and a half inches long it is one mighty example of a Danish freehand. What’s particularly impressive is the grain – it’s very difficult to carve something this big and maintain consistency in the grain patterns. The left side of the bowl is loaded with bird’s-eyes, while the right mixes bird’s-eye with straight and flame grain. A light brown, almost blonde, stain has been used to emphasize the briar’s chatoyant glow, which is offset nicely by the pipe’s jet black stem. I also really enjoy the plateau rim – a hallmark of Danish freehands – which owing to the size of the pipe is surrounded on the interior of the bowl by a beveling of sorts.

The condition is great being that it’s unsmoked. You’d think with something this big, there would be plenty of faults to count. I don’t see anything, aside from some very minor darkening on the tip of the bowl’s interior.
