The Moretti make was originally founded by Igino Moretti in 1968, in the small, but historic, Italian town of Recanati. Igino Moretti had previously been a craftsman at Hully Briar, one of the many pipe factories that had held a presence in Recanati since the 19th century. After departing Hully and taking a brief hiatus from pipe making, Igino Moretti created his own brand, Moretti Recanati, which produced pipes under its own name and as a contractor for other brands requiring high-quality Italian pipes. In more recent decades, Moretti Recanati was inherited by Igino Moretti’s son-in law, Marco Biagini, who later simplified the name of the brand to “Moretti.” Today, Moretti pipes are made by hand by Biagini in his workshop, which is situated just across the street from what was once the home one of Italy’s most famous writers, the Recanati Romanticist Giacomo Leopardi.

In addition to his briars, Marco Biagini crafts pipes from all sorts of other storied materials for his Moretti pipes. One of these materials is morta, a form of fossilized oak that hardens for hundreds, or even thousands, of years before being harvested to make tobacco pipes. This is one of his sturdy, diamond shank billiard renditions, carved from bog oak, and fitted with a hand cut cumberland mouthpiece.

This pipe is completely unsmoked and comes with its original sleeve.
