Description
While some pipe-makers take inspiration from the natural world, or from the technologies of present and past, few of them in the contemporary seek to represent these forms in their work. Czech artisan Ondrej Bárta of Moonlight pipes does just that, in a way that recalls the intricate, figural carvings of briar pipes from the turn of the 20th century. But Ondrej also departs from the figural approach of early briar pipes by combining it with high-grade materials and a careful attention to grain patterns that is far more modern.
As mentioned in another recent listing, Ondrej Bárta has, with his latest pipes, been taking his incredibly popular “Steampunk” motif and applying it to ever more different shapes. In the past, Bárta has focused his efforts on the Oom Paul, which is particularly suited to the steampunk motif due to its innately machine-like figure. But Oom Pauls are not the only shapes that such a motif can gel with. Along with the Geiger-esque tomato listed with this batch, there is this fascinating take on the otherwise very traditional cutty and Zulu shapes. As with the tomato, there is a little of H.R. Geiger in this one, given its admixture of organic and industrial forms. But it is also a little more restrained and less bold, letting the meticulously carved patchwork of weathered leather, bolds, and cylinders lend a distinct aesthetic to a still recognizably classic design.
