Moonlight Pipes “Outgrowth” Lovat w/ Brass Handmade Briar Pipe, New

Out of stock

Description

While some pipe-makers take inspiration from the natural world, or from the technologies of present and past, few of them in the contemporary seek to represent these forms in their work. Czech artisan Ondrej Bárta of Moonlight pipes does just that, in a way that recalls the intricate, figural carvings of briar pipes from the turn of the 20th century. But Ondrej also departs from the figural approach of early briar pipes by combining it with high-grade materials and a careful attention to grain patterns that is far more modern.

As mentioned with regards to another recently listed Moonlight Pipe, Ondrej Bárta’s latest batch shows a marked blending of industrial and organic elements. In the case of this one, the former is represented by one of Bárta’s signature brass faux-spigot mounts, though the bulk of the pipe is even closer to his idiosyncratic fascination with the latter. Like Paul Larrysson Hubartt before him, Bárta is especially drawn to figural carvings whose subject matters come from plant life. While Hubartt was well known for his “tree trunk” briars, Bárta has shown a greater interest in roots and vines, carefully replicating the twisting, diverging lines that define them. Here we see that interest on full display, culminating in a bowl that—as the pipe’s name implies—emerges out of a mass of spiraling fibers.
