Description

Memo Pipes are crafted by Persian artisan Medhi Aghdam, also known as Memo. With a background and abiding passion for painting, photography, toolmaking and woodworking, Memo’s interest in pipe making was sparked by a realization that pipes were a way to unite the two poles of his main interests—aesthetics and technics. Unsurprisingly, Danish masters like Tom Eltang, along with their associated ethos of the pipe as a “functional work of art,” have been significant sources of inspiration. Like so many artisans today, however, Aghdam’s first teachers were Türkiye’s Kenan Adhmet and America’s Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes. Using the online resources made available by Kenan and Gracik, Aghdam gradually developed his skills throughout the 2010s. In 2019, he was able to become a full-time pipe maker, crafting his own functional works of art in the form of Memo Pipes.

This particular pipe leans into Memo’s Danish and Danish-American influences, taking the guise of a compact and enjoyably plump eighth-bent brandy. Making his own contribution to a definite tradition of brandy shapes—one that stretches across space and time, from Jess Chonowitsch, to J. Alan, to Vladimir Grechukhin, and others—Memo’s rendition showcases crisp and craggy sandblasting, accentuated by a light, desert red contrast finish.
