Description
Much like the MBSD Meerschaum Silver and Silver Cap lines, the Double Silver is comprised exclusively of sterling silver-mounted meerschaum. But, as the name suggests, Double Silver pipes are mounted not once, but twice. Each features a sterling silver cap at its rim, protecting the bowl and chamber from slips of the flame and lava build-up, as well as a sterling silver fitment at the shank end, typically in the form of an army mount. Each is made using the same high-grade, fast-coloring Turkish block meerschaum found on our other various meerschaum lines, but with even more finery than any of the meers we’ve offered thus far.
Many of the designs for our MBSD Meerschaums are influenced by post-war Danish artisan briars, as well as the styles pursued by the pipe makers who followed in their wake. Often this results in brandy, Dublin, and Rhodesian shapes inspired by the likes of Former, or S. Bang, though in the case of this one, the inspiration came from some of the earliest pioneers in Scandinavian handmade pipes. Taking the form of a slightly plump and more than slightly tall, stacked egg, the aim was to try to capture the distinctive shaping of certain makers within the 1960s Pibe-Dan (later known as Pipe Dan) milieu, such as Sven Knudsen, Gert Holbek, or Poul Hansen. Less a direct copy than a not to the spirit of such designs, the pipe also features a far more Turkish, teardrop lattice carved finish, as well as a reverse calabash system in its shank, which should provide an even cooler, drier smoke than a standard-bore briar or meerschaum pipe.
This pipe comes with a custom-fitted hard case.
