Timeless Traditions is part of a new instalment of our own, house-brand pipes. After creating the affordable “By Vitale” line in partnership with Piero Vitale, we wanted to expand into pipes that were made by hand, but were still easy on the wallet. This gave birth to two new series of pipes; one that would be more classical in style, and another that would be more contemporary.

Timeless Traditions is the first of the new MBSD Briars series. As the name implies, these pipes are heavily inspired by the briars of the interwar years, but whose designs have shown themselves to be, simply, timeless. Countless hours were spent scouring the catalogs of early 20th century factory giants, from Barling to Kaywoodie, with the intention of capturing the essence of the old world, while making sure to keep in mind the needs of today’s pipe smokers.

For shape No. 2 of the Timeless Traditions series, we kept things uncomplicated. Based on the feedback from our first Timeless Traditions shape, the classic “army mount” straight billiard, we decided to expand the series to include an easy-hanging, ¾ bent variation on that same theme. As with Timeless Traditions No.1, No.2 is turned from high-quality briar, mounted with sterling silver, and fitted with hand-cut ebonite mouthpieces, paying homage once more to a simple, yet sophisticated, design that helped define a generation of smoking pipes.

In the case of this Timeless Traditions No. 1, we’ve taken that homage a little further than our other pipes. As many a great 20th make would discover all those decades ago, sometimes it happens that a stummel, as it is being turned, exhibits remarkably uniform patterning running around the bowl. These stummels are especially receptive to sandblasting, resulting in rich, ring grain finishes. As is tradition, pipes from our MBSD Briars with the most exemplary graining (typically in the form of a ring grain or bird’s-eye relief) have been given a light, tan finish, rather than a more subdued, walnut, burgundy, or black one.

The Timeless Traditions series is available in smooth and sandblasted finishes.
