Description
Modern Masters is part of the second instalment of our own, house-brand pipes. After creating the affordable “By Vitale” line in partnership with Piero Vitale, we wanted to expand into pipes that were made by hand, but were still easy on the wallet. This gave birth to two new series of pipes; one that would be more classical in style, and another that would be more contemporary.
Modern Masters is the second of the new MBSD Briars series. This series pays tribute to the individual pipe makers who, while no longer being with us, continue to define artisan pipe making as we know it. We selected some of the most influential designs from the late, great artisans of the post-war period and created homages to our personal favorites.
Modern Masters shape 1 is our tribute to one of the original pioneers of modern pipe making and one of the very first “freehand” carvers: Sixten Ivarsson. While there are countless designs by Sixten Ivarsson design that we could have chosen from, we ultimately decided on one that arguably inaugurated “Scandinavian pipe making,” the Peewit. Inspired by the eggs of the northern lapwing, Ivarsson’s Peewits have remained a firm favorite among pipe smokers and collectors since their conception in the 1950s. This one is based on one of the many Peewit shapes Ivarsson created using bamboo, a material he was especially partial to throughout his career, and is paired with a simple, hand-cut black ebonite stem and aluminum tenon.
Modern Masters series pipes are available in smooth and sandblast finishes.
