Madao 3000 is the pipe making moniker of Beijing-based artisan Wang Tieyuan. Inspired equally by post-Scandinavian giants, such as Hiroyuki Tokutomi and by classical Asian art and philosophy, Tieyuan’s work is focused on exploring themes such as asymmetry and motion in ways that are, nonetheless, balanced and harmonious. A strict minimalist, Tieyuan eschews contrast stains and fanciful adornments in his designs; instead, he most often employs simple matte or natural finishes, is sparing with his use of accents (if he uses them at all), and upholds, in each pipe he makes, the primacy of line, figure, and form.
This pipe is perhaps the clearest example of Tieyuan’s design philosophy in his most recent batch for us. It is recognizably a bent Dublin, though it plays with the shape’s classical convention, incorporating subtle asymmetries at the rim and shank end, wedding a ridge line into each flank that follows from the former to the latter, and all but removing one half of its titular bend, giving the design as a whole an energetic, “leaping” profile. The pipe has been finished with a natural sandblast—sans stain, only waxed—that foregrounds a crip relief of ring grain and bird’s-eye, fitted with a black German ebonite mouthpiece, and had its mortise stabilized with an integral brass military mount.
