Description

In a span of less than 10 years, São Paulo’s Luiz Lavos has worked his way to widespread international acclaim, occupying a position at the forefront of an exciting new movement in Brazilian artisan pipes. Like his contemporaries Gustavo Cunha, aka marTelo, Flavia Rodrigues, and Emanuel de Queiroz Emiliano, Lavos has help put Brazil firmly on the map as regards high-grade pipes, and like his contemporaries, he’s also had a rather prestigious pipe making education. Lavos’ development as a pipe maker has been aided by renowned figures from around the world, including Sabina Santos, Hans “Former” Nielsen, Premal Chheda, and Chris Asteriou. He has lived, learned, and worked in Europe and South America, and now resides in his native Brazil, carving high-end pipes for anyone lucky enough to get their hands on one.

While the Brazilian artisan scene has been influenced by pipe makers of all stripes, there remains a distinct fondness for traditional designs in each of its major representatives. Cunha is famous for his LC renditions, for example; Rodrigues frequently returns to the humble billiard for inspiration; and Emiliano’s portfolio is laden with Dublin and cutty shapes. Lavos is the same, enjoying both the ergonomic and aesthetic elements of classic Anglo-French shapes. The prince is one shape that each of the new Brazilian artisans seems to hold dear, to the point where it is difficult choosing whose is the most impressive. On the other hand, each approaches the shape a little differently. This one from Lavos demonstrates his preference for military-mounted designs though, as can be seen here, he also tends to employ materials other than the standard silver or nickel in making them. Instead, Lavos more commonly uses materials such as horn, Ivorite, and polymerized seeds from Brazil’s native Jupati tree. This prince is mounted with with Ivorite, lending it an even more traditional vibe given what the material is intended to imitate. It also works beautifully with the pipe’s ruby red finish and black ebonite mouthpiece, creating a pipe that really does evoke the “old world” to which the prince originally belonged.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original wrap.
