Julius Vesz (1988) Hand Cut (5) Extra Large Partially Rusticated Brandy (Estate)

Hungarian-Canadian artisan Julius Vesz carved his first pipe all the way back in 1959, and continues making pipes today in the 2020s. With 60 years of experience in the craft, he is recognized as one of the most seasoned and skilled pipe makers around, counting among his admirers luminaries such as Richard Carleton Hacker, who remarked upon the “rare elegance” inherent to Vesz’s work.

Julius Vesz is famous both for his pipes and for the briar he uses to make them. He’s been collecting good briar since the earliest years of his pipe making endeavors, and while all of his pipes are made from his personally curated, well-aged stock of blocks, only the finest among them is used for his Hand Cut series.

In the case of this group 5 brandy, the block in question must have furthermore been an exceptionally large one, as it is a sizeable piece—a Vesz-style “house pipe,” if you will. Vezs’s signature micro-rustication gives the pipe a nice hand-feel too, which has been partially applied, aside from a “cap” of smooth polished, straight grain briar at its rim.

The condition is good. Some darkening and slight scratches on the rim, and some minor oxidation on the mouthpiece.
