Description

Born and raised in the small town of Gueydan, Louisana, Jason Mouton’s rise in the ranks of American pipe makers has been nothing less than meteoric—and for good reason. Having crafted duck calls since he was a teenager, Mouton’s first forays into pipe making began with carving tampers. Mouton’s unexpected and substantial successes with these handmade tampers encouraged and allowed him to purchase the equipment needed to create pipes themselves. Studying the works of renowned American artisans such as J. Alan, Grant Batson, and Jared Coles, Mouton gradually developed his own pipe making craft, which was furthered by his exchanges with Greek artisan Chris Asteriou. Today, Mouton’s works are some of the most sought after on the artisan market, a demand which he has responded to—and not unlike his beginnings in carving tampers—by reinvesting his successes into an unwavering advancement of his skills and technique.

I had a feeling I recognized this pipe when it came in. A couple years back, the Cyprus-based artisan Yiannos Kokkinos suffered a terrible burglary, resulting in the loss of a lot of his equipment. As it often does in these situations, the pipe community came together to help Kokkinos get back on his feet, with a charity raffle organized to fund that recovery. Louisiana’s J. Mouton really went the extra mile, crafting a pipe specially for the occasion, letting it be raffled off with proceeds going to Kokkinos. He certainly didn’t skimp on it, either. As can be seen here, once again, Mouton’s contribution was a stout, beautifully sandblasted Dublin, with ring grain so craggy you might think it was etched on. The pipe also featured plenty by way of accoutrements, as Mouton’s pipes tend to, with this one having a shank extension cut from thick bamboo root, with a piece of fossilized walrus tooth inlaid in its right node.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original sleeve.
