If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.
Similarly to another HS Studio listed recently, this one blends the subdued, squat, plumpness of the traditional tomato with the sweeping curvature of an Oom Paul shape, and is similarly reminiscent of the pipes of Roman Kovalev, of Doctor’s Pipes. As with the former and with Kovalev’s designs, the pipe uses a shank extension cut from bamboo to aid in its drilling of such a difficult composition, though its overall design is much more svelte and low-slung than your typical Doctor’s.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original sleeve.
