Description
Eclesias Pipes are made by Pavel Eclesias Holub, a Czech artisan and a genuine cult sensation in contemporary handmade pipes. Like his friend and former teacher, Jiří “Biftek” Maczko, Holub is one of the most prominent and recognizable figures in the Czech artisan community today, one that has become increasingly central in the broader European scene. Part of this no doubt comes down to his distinctive approach to the aesthetics of pipes, incorporating shapes and finishes that are, at times, singularly “Czech” and, at others, entirely of his own making.
While many of the pipes in this latest batch from Pavel Holub have featured his signature “Dragon Scale” sandblast finish, one defined by its deep grooves jagged edges, he’s also included a few other pipes that exhibit his versatility with a blasting cabinet. This long egg rendition in the early Danish vein, for example, wears a relatively new finish adopted by Holub, the “Moonblast.” The finish pairs a fairly light relief with a slight contrast stain, evoking the iron-rich basins on its namesake’s surface. In this instance, the design has an added “mineral” touch by way of a marbled inlay at the base of its hand-cut black acrylic mouthpiece.
