Pavel Holub’s portfolio is largely comprised of sandblast finishes (including his signature “Dragon Scale” sandblast), but, on rare occasions, he opts for a smooth finish, so long as the briar suits it. In this instance, it’s clear to see why Holub chose to spare his briar from the blasting cabinet. A compact, though still quite stout, sitter billiard, the bird’s-eye flanking the bowl on this Eclesias is quite gorgeous, as is the tiger stripe cross-grain that can be seen connecting it. A high contrast finish has been used to accentuate the briar’s patterning even further, with a hand cut cumberland stem adding to the pipe’s all round fiery aesthetic.
