Description
While slender Dublin shapes have existed for over a century, it was, strangely enough, the great Scandinavian pipe makers in the post-war period who would end up being some of their most stalwart champions. While figures such as the Swedish Sixten Ivarsson and the Danish Tom Eltang have created plenty of novel and unorthodox pipe shapes over the decades, their affinities for functionalist design philosophy helped to preserve a deep appreciation for the classics, albeit in more or less refined forms. The “Arne Jacobsen” is a particular genre of Dublin conceived by Tom Eltang, as an homage to both Jacobsen’s role as a pioneer of functionalism and to the pencil shank pipes Jacobsen himself was known to enjoy. Following Eltang’s lead, the “Arne” has become an artisan staple all of its own, with renditions produced across the continents of contemporary pipe making.
This particular Arne, made by Czech artisan Pavel “Eclesias” Holub, leans even heavily into the functionalist ethos than most others, being a compact and exceedingly lightweight (14 grams!) interpretation, dressed in a modest, near black partial sandblast.
