To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.

Dunhill’s group 6 pipes are among the rarest and largest pipes the company manufactures, beaten out in the latter category only by its OD shapes and once-in-a-blue-moon Magnums. As for rarity, this is even more the case for Dunhill’s high-end lines (in what is already a very high-end portfolio), such as the lightly-finished Root Briar. It’s a matter of probability: as briar is a natural object, the greater the size of a block, the greater the chance of finding visually unappealing spots or whorls in the grain or—worse—sand pits that threaten to disqualify the block from use entirely. As the Root Briar wears a light finish, the briar has to be perfect; as group 6 pipes are large, so too must be the block from which their bowls are turned. Thus a group 6 is rare, and a group 6 Root Briar is even rarer. This one is both, and it is marvelous. It is a hefty pipe, taking the form of a decidedly stout billiard, but it also proves that big and beautiful are by no means mutually exclusive. The sea of uninterrupted bird’s-eye grain at either flank make that case better than any philosophical argument could.

This pipe is also completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original box, sleeve, and even its aluminum inner tube.
