Dunhill 1973 Shell Briar 792 Sandblasted Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates
Out of stock
Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in the first decade of the 20th century, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the “Rolls-Royce” of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
Dunhill’s “792” belongs to a genre of shapes that are far less common these days than they used to be, but which nonetheless have a certain cult appeal, especially among artisan pipe makers. That genre is the oval shank billiard, which, as one might guess, is a billiard rendition, but an the oval shank and mouthpiece more typical of, say, a Canadian or Zulu. This one comes from 1973 and wears Dunhill’s signature dark sandblast finish, the Shell Briar, which in this instance has produced a nicely tactile, bird’s-eye relief finish at either flank.
The condition is very good. Some finish fading and stem slightly over-buffed at the base, though nothing major.
