Dunhill 1971 Root Briar 101 Bent Billiard w/ Silver Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

Out of stock

Description

To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.

Dunhill did not invent the army mount, or military mount, as an element of pipe design—not by a long stretch—but a strong case could be make that Alfred Dunhill’s company perfected them. Next to the Barling family, Dunhill has also had some of the best in the business working for them in this endeavor, too. This classic, sterling silver mounted billiard, for example, was made in 1971, meaning the silver mounting was very likely to have been done by Les Wood, a master silversmith and later a master pipe maker in his own right, under the Ferndown name. Regardless of who specifically worked on it, the army mount on this shape 101 billiard lends an extra touch of class to an already very classy pipe, one from Dunhill’s higher-end Root Briar line.

The condition is good. Minor inner rim charring, chamber slightly over-reamed, and some handling marks on the bowl.
