Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
The “R” was one of Dunhill’s mid-century Quaint shapes, i.e., shapes not in as regular production as other shapes. Instead, they were produced when a block of briar showed a certain inclination toward that shape, as briar tends to do. A relatively compact, lightweight pot, it features a good wide chamber (perfect for ribbon and mixture cuts) as well as an ample amount of depth, allowing for ample time to enjoy one’s favorite English blend, for example.
The condition is fair. Rim darkening, finish fading, slight residual oxidation, and a slightly over-buffed stem.
