About this pipe:
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction, and indeed if there is one make that even non-pipe smokers are likely to recognize, it is the White-Spotted English mainstay. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the “Rolls-Royce” of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
The “475,” also known as the “Friendly,” was one of a number of cherrywood sitter renditions put out by Dunhill in the midcentury. Interestingly, these were some of the very few shapes that, when dressed in a sandblast finish, had their rims left smooth, creating a nice contrast effect on the bowl. This one, from 1963, is dressed in Dunhill’s iconic Shell Briar finish, juxtaposing a craggy, dark relief with a slightly softer, smooth rounded rim.
The condition is fair. Some rim darkening, finish fading, stem slightly over-buffed and a couple of scratches on the pipe’s flattened base.
