Description
Don Florian is the nom de plume or, better yet, nom d’une pipe of Matteo Stefani, an Italian artisan based in San Floriano del Collio. Stefani was formerly a lawyer, but he was also a pipe smoker and a collector of high-grade pipes, which ultimately led him to take up pipe making in 2008. He’s also a rather interesting pipe maker, in that, somewhat like fellow Italian Baldo Baldi, he uses very few machine tools in the construction of his pipes, preferring instead to shape them by hand using rasps and other manual instruments. His pipes are also typically very lightly finished, using only carnauba wax to lend them an extra shine, rather than any stains or dyes. Part of why he is able to do this comes down to how selective he is about the briar he uses, which comes from Corsica and Calabria is always seasoned least 5 years prior to its use.
This is one of his Rhodesian renditions, with the briar’s natural beauty on full display, complemented by an ivory-like acrylic mouthpiece.
The condition is great. Minor inner rim darkening, but overall lightly and carefully smoked, and well preserved as a result.
