Don Carlos One Note Rusticated Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Description

Don Carlos belongs to a historic lineage within Italian pipe making. The workshop was founded by Bruto Sordini (along with his wife Rosaria), who had previously made pipes for Mastro de Paja, where he also met Giancarlo Guidi. In 1981, Sordini and Guidi left Mastro de Paja to found their own workshop, Ser Jacopo. After years of making pipes at Ser Jacopo, Sordini once again departed to found a new venture, as he had ideas for shapes and styles that were quite different to Ser Jacopo’s established design philosophy. Sordini therefore created Don Carlos as a means of expressing this vision, resulting in pipes that are both quintessentially Italian, and bearing aesthetic that is wholly their own.

Music plays a big part in the world of Don Carlos pipes, from the Sordinis’ logos and grading system, to running themes for extended series, and even to the shaping of the pipes themselves. In a manner not unlike America’s Ed Burak, for example, the Sordinis’ bent Dublin renditions often have something of a brass section to them, with figures resembling a trumpet, or a saxophone, as seen on this especially tall-bowled number. The finishing of Don Carlos pipes, on the other hand, is typically much more Italian, with the Sordinis having their own, sharp and densely layered take on the nation’s favorite pebble-dash rustication.

The condition is very good. Minor inner rim darkening and chamber slightly over-reamed.
