Celius pipes were hand made in the workshop of Svend Axel Celius, one of the first generation of iconic carvers in the Danish style that emerged in the mid-20th century. Beginning his career under Poul Rasmussen and Sven Knudsen, Celius later started his own brand of pipes using his last name, while also occasionally carving pipes for Denmark’s famous pipe houses Pipe-Dan and W.Ø. Larsen.

While he was a major contributor to the emergence of the “Danish Fancy” style of freehand pipes, Svend Axel Celius’s approach to such pipes is among the most recognizable in the genre. Favoring strong, sharp, yet still decidedly lightweight pickaxes, Dublins, and hybrids of the two, it’s typically quite easy to pick out a Celius among contemporaneous works in a similar vein. This one, for example, is one of his signature, plateaux-topped Dublins, with flame grain lining its bowl and a fancy, vulcanite mouthpiece adding an extra layer of “Danishness” to the design.

The condition is good. Some inner rim charring and stem slightly over-buffed at the base.
