Description

4th Generation—or, rather, Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation, to use its full name—is a brand of pipes first conceived by Denmark’s Erik Stokkebye, who holds the accomplishment of representing the most recent of the four (so far) generations of the Stokkebye family’s involvement in pipes and tobaccos. Erik Stokkebye himself does not make pipes; rather, he contracts this task to some of the world’s great pipe makers, most of which are also Danish, to create them. Those familiar with the history of Danish pipes may already be familiar with the pipes made by Jorgen Larsen for Peter Stokkebye (Erik’s father) around the 1970s. Several decades later, Erik would become the second generation in the Stokkebye family to o the same.

As mentioned, the Stokkebye family have had a long history of commissioning world-class pipe makers to craft pipes for the Stokkebye brand. While Peter Stokkebye primarily enlisted Jorgen Larsen, Erik Stokkebye has, over the last decade or so, had his 4th Generation pipes made by a whole roster of master carvers. This has included a number of world-class Danish pipe makers, such as Tom Eltang, Peder Jeppesen, Erik Nording, and Manduela Riger-Kusk. Recently, however, has also included similarly high-grade makers from beyond Stokkebye’s native Denmark, such as Belgium’s Bruno Nuttens, Japan’s Asami Kikuchi of Tsuge Ikebana, and, in this instance, Italy’s Roberto Ascorti. This “1931” design pays homage to the broad, “chubby” apples of Danish pipe making, with a basic form not unlike something that, for example, Former, Tao, or Ph. Vigen might make. On the other hand, the pipe is dressed in a near-black, wire rusticated finish, and fitted with a copper army mount and orange Lucite stem—in other words, Erik Stokkebye’s signature color scheme.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original box.
