The Roma pipes in this category should not be confused with Savinelli’s Roma series. These are tobacco pipes stamped with the Roma name whose exact manufacturer has not been conclusively established. Available evidence suggests that many were produced in Italy, possibly as factory seconds or as pipes made for export and retail distribution.
In pipe manufacturing, the term “second” generally refers to a pipe with a minor cosmetic imperfection that prevented it from being sold under a factory’s primary brand. It does not necessarily indicate poor drilling, construction, or smoking performance. Many of the Roma pipes handled by MBSD have been straightforward, traditionally shaped briars with smooth finishes and minimal decoration.
The MBSD archive includes Roma billiards, apples, authors, Rhodesians, eggs, pokers, vases, and churchwardens. Most have arrived completely unsmoked through the secondary market and are therefore classified as unsmoked estate pipes rather than new pipes.
