Description

In 1974, after growing impatient waiting for a pipe he’d ordered, Claudio Cavicchi decided he would simply make his own pipe instead. The former farmer from Bologna, Italy, spent the next 15 years making pipes, until his work took off and received widespread acclaim. Cavicchi’s pipe-making exploits have only become more renowned in the decades since. Today, Cavicchi’s pipes hold a firm place at the top of an extraordinarily competitive Italian high-grades scene, being as carefully and meticulously crafted as they are beautiful. With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that Claudio himself is a world record holding slow smoking champion.

While Claudio Cavicchi is an incredibly versatile pipe maker, he has shown an affinity for a rather surprising genre of shapes over the years: so-called “squat” shapes. From bullcaps to Rhodesians, pots to saucers, if you can think of a wide and low slung shape, Cavicchi has his own, masteful rendition. One highly distinctive squat shape that Cavicchi has continued to revisit over his career, however, is the tomato, though Cavicchi’s variations are quite unlike those of his American, Danish, or even Italian counterparts. Combining the shape’s signature bowl with a long, slender, gently inclined shank and short saddle stem, Cavicchi’s tomatoes are not easily mistaken for anyone else’s. Of course, being a Cavicchi, the stummel is lit up by flame grain that circles its bowl and trails all the way up to its shank end.

This pipe is completely unsmoked and comes with its original sleeve.
